Canada eSIM with hotspot: what to check first
Need a laptop hotspot in Canada? Check which CanadianSIM plans support tethering, how travel-plan limits differ and what to verify.
The essentials
What to know first
- Prepaid limit
CanadianSIM’s current prepaid eSIMs do not include hotspot.
- Monthly option
Rogers monthly offers include hotspot, with longer-stay eligibility and billing.
- Compare sharing
Check the exact daily or total tethering allowance.
In this guide
If you need to connect a laptop or share internet with another traveller, check hotspot support before buying a Canada eSIM. A large phone-data allowance does not establish that tethering is included. CanadianSIM’s current prepaid travel eSIMs do not support hotspot; its current Rogers monthly offers do.
| Service | Hotspot position | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| CanadianSIM prepaid 20 GB / 30 days | Not supported | Choose it only if its phone-data and calling features fit your trip without tethering. |
| CanadianSIM prepaid 90 GB / 30 days | Not supported | The larger data allowance does not change the hotspot restriction. |
| CanadianSIM Rogers 100 GB monthly | Included | Monthly billing and eligibility for a longer stay. |
| CanadianSIM Rogers 120 GB monthly | Included | Monthly billing; Canada/USA roaming is an additional feature. |
| Other travel eSIM packages | Varies by product | Daily or total hotspot allowance, fair use, devices and supported network. |
CanadianSIM terms: CanadianSIM prepaid plans and CanadianSIM monthly plans. A short visitor who needs hotspot should compare a suitable travel product; do not choose an unsuitable monthly plan merely to obtain that feature.
Calculate the work your hotspot needs to do
Separate phone use from the devices you will connect. A laptop can download system updates, synchronize cloud folders or back up photographs without an obvious prompt. A short email session and several video meetings are different requirements. Use your own recent data records as the starting point instead of a generic promise that a certain allowance covers everyone.
- List the devices that will share the connection.
- Estimate how many days will require tethering, and whether hotel or campus Wi-Fi is a reliable alternative.
- Check the package’s specific sharing allowance and any speed reduction after a threshold.
- Turn off unnecessary cloud backups and automatic downloads on connected devices.
- Save offline maps and essential documents before travelling.
An unlimited label is not a hotspot allowance
For example, Holafly Canada plan details currently lists a separate 1 GB/day hotspot allowance for its Canada travel product. Read the selected offer rather than applying that figure to other providers or other Holafly products. Airalo hotspot guidance also makes device and network support relevant. Compare all of these terms with the dates and amount of sharing you need.
Check the phone and the plan separately
A Personal Hotspot menu shows a phone feature. It does not override the plan’s restrictions. Conversely, a plan that permits tethering still needs a compatible, unlocked device and correct setup. Use the phone compatibility checker for SIM-format questions and the provider’s instructions for hotspot settings.
If hotspot is not working after arrival
First confirm that the package includes it and that the chosen data line is the intended one. Check the provider’s installation and APN instructions; do not copy another provider’s settings. Contact support with the plan name and phone model. Do not buy a bigger version of a no-hotspot package expecting the restriction to disappear.
Questions before you buy
Does the 90 GB CanadianSIM prepaid plan include hotspot?
No. The current prepaid product FAQ excludes hotspot/tethering, including the 90 GB package.
Can I use a monthly plan just for a brief holiday?
Check eligibility and billing terms. CanadianSIM presents these monthly offers for stays of 90 days or more; a travel product with the features you need may be a better fit.
Does eSIM itself prevent tethering?
No. The relevant conditions are the phone, network and selected plan.
